Maxo Vanka at work on the murals in 1937 and 1941. During his two 8-week stays in Pittsburgh he was almost devoted to the completion of the panels and spent most of his time in St. Nicholas. He kept his family informed about his project through the sketches and letters below providing a light-hearted glimpse into the complex logistics of painting the church. Vanka constructed the scaffolding and is reported to have worn a set of horse blinders to ensure complete concentration on the work. Close examination of the sketches reveal many personal touches including the names of family members on the boards and his constant companion; a small bird that was often perched on his shoulder or in his pocket.
